Amherst, Mass. - After five
scoreless innings, UAlbany got on the board first with a single run in the top
of the sixth, but Massachusetts responded with two in the bottom of the frame
and held on for the one-run, 2-1, win in non-conference baseball action on
Saturday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.
A
pitching duel between each team's starters took the game through the fifth
inning with no score. Finally, in the top of the sixth, the UAlbany hitters got
a hold of UMass right hander Dennis Torres. D.J. Hoagboon singled through the
right side, and advanced to second on an error. After a second Minutemen error
moved Hoagboon 90 feet from home, a sacrifice hit by Gordon Madej brought the
left fielder home to give UAlbany a 1-0 lead.
UMass
responded in the bottom of the frame, plating two runs to take a one-run
advantage. Ryan Cusick knocked a triple into right field and came home on a
ground out to tie the game. Rob McLam, who walked earlier in the inning, put
the Minutemen on top, crossing home plate on an RBI-double by Tom Conley later
in the inning. Torres held the Great Danes to just one more hit in the next two
innings, before Tim Stoops and Conor LeBlanc closed out the ninth. Torres
earned the win on the mound for the Minutemen, while LeBlanc got the save.
UAlbany
starter Zach Kraham went five innings with six strikeouts, while scattering
just three hits. Kevin Archbold took the loss, as he allowed both runs to
score. Hoagboon was the only Great Dane to finish with multiple hits, while
Josh Nethaway recorded his fifth double of the season in the game.
UAlbany
(5-17-1) and UMass (5-8) will return to action on Sunday, with a doubleheader
starting at noon.
