Albany, N.Y.- UAlbany's Brittany MacFawn pitched her fourth complete shutout en route to a UAlbany doubleheader sweep against Maine on Saturday, March 31 at Albany Field. UAlbany improves to 4-1 in conference play and 17-7 overall while Maine falls to 0-2 in conference play and 6-21 overall.
MacFawn (8-3) went the distance, scattering just five hits over seven innings and striking out 10 batters. The sophomore pitcher has now punched out 10-plus batters for the fifth time this season.
UAlbany (17-7, 4-1 AE), in game one, got on the scoreboad fast in the bottom of the second with a lead-off single from Charlise Castro. Vicky McFarland dropped a bunt-single then both Castro and McFarland advanced to second and third during Mel Herndon's at-bat. Herndon followed with an RBI-single up the middle to drive in Castro. Alexa Toole would cap the inning off with a two-run double to put the Great Danes up 3-0.
UAlbany would tally two more insurance runs, one in the fourth and one in the fifth, to take game one of the doubleheader.
The Great Danes would continue where they left off in game two tallying three runs in the bottom of the first.
Maine (6-21, 0-2 AE) got on the board after 10 scoreless innings with two runs in the top of the fourth. Dagmar Ralphs got the Black Bears going with a lead-off single to left field, Jennifer Eberhardt followed with a double to left center and Jenny MacDowell drove both runners in with a double down the left field line.
MacDowell would cut the defecit to one run, 4-3, in the top of the sixth with a home run to left center but Maine would fall short in game two.
The Great Danes continue the 2012 schedule with game three of the three-game series against Maine on Sunday, April 1 at Albany Field.
