UAlbany Baseball Drops Series Finale to Coastal Carolina, 12-8

Conway, S.C. - Despite three hits and three RBI by first baseman Josh Nethaway, UAlbany lost to Coastal Carolina, 12-8, in the finale of the three-game weekend series between the two teams on Sunday afternoon. UAlbany falls to 5-15 on the season, while Coastal Carolina improves to 16-6.

The Chanticleers took a 2-0 lead after the first inning, holding the Great Danes scoreless until the fourth. UAlbany tied the game in that frame, as Pete DiResta singled through the left side to lead off the frame. With one out, Nethaway smacked a home run over the left field fence to score DiResta and tie the game at 2-2.

After Coastal Carolina plated one run in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead, UAlbany exploded for five runs in the top of the fifth to build up a 7-3 advantage. The Great Danes got two runners on base with a hit by pitch and a walk, with both runners scoring on a Joey Tracy double down the left field line. Coastal intentionally walked Mike Tirri to get two runners on again, and Nethaway doubled through the left side to score Tracy. The final two scores came home for UAlbany on a base hit by D.J. Hoagboon that went into right field.

The Great Danes scored their final run of the game in the top of the sixth, as Nolan Gaige doubled into center to score Brian Bullard, who singled to lead off the frame. Coastal Carolina plated two runs in each of the next two innings to stage its comeback. The Chanticleers regained the lead and completed the rally with five runs in the bottom of the eighth. UAlbany got a baserunner in the ninth, but was unable to get anyone home.

UAlbany starter Kasceim Graham went six and a third innings on the mound, striking out one opposing batter. Reliever Greg Lutton took the loss for the Great Danes after an inning of work. Joey Moore and Stephen Carey also saw action for UAlbany. Patrick Corbett earned the win for Coastal Carolina, going two and a third innings.

The Great Danes will return to action on Tuesday, hosting Cornell in a non-conference doubleheader at 2 p.m.
