UAlbany Softball Sweeps Delaware State In Doubleheader

Dover, Del.- Brittany MacFawn (2-2) threw her first shutout of the season as UAlbany swept Delaware State (5-0, 18-2) on Thursday, March 15 at the Hornets Nest. UAlbany has won three straight and improves to 7-5 overall after out scoring Delaware State 23-2 in the doubleheader.

Lauren Alcorn and Kylie Apostolina went a combined 7-for-14 with five runs scored and five RBIs while Alexa Toole and Taylor Franich each collected three hits.

The bats came alive in the second game for the Great Danes, as the team recorded 18 runs on 19 hits. Vicky McFarland led-off the first inning with a walk, Taylor Franich reached on an error, Charlise Castro drove both runners in with a single down the left side, Apostolina got on with a single up the middle and Lauren Alcorn capped the inning with two-run single down the right side of the field.

More runs followed in the second inning as seven of UAlbany's nine batters would score in the inning tallying six hits and one sacrafice fly. Then in the third inning the Great Danes would add on four more runs with Alcorn recording her fifth RBI of the game on a ground out to short.

Brittany Schwieger (3-1) would earn her team-leading third victory of the season pitching only two innings while allowing two runs on two hits, both runs coming in the second inning off of a solo homerun by Delaware State's Stephanie Martello and rbi double from Tawny Reeger.

In game one, MacFawn would pitch seven scoreless innings, scattering five hits and striking out seven. Both teams would be scoreless through three innings until the top of the fourth when Alcorn would reach on a single, Stephanie Talerico would reach on an error from short, Alexa Toole would drive in pinch-runner Christina Patrick on a single and Vicky McFarland would cap the inning with a RBI single down the left side to drive in Talerico.

Then in the top of the sixth, the Great Danes would begin the inning with two consecutive doubles from Talerico and Toole followed by a sacrifice bunt by Diane McDowell to drive in Toole.
