Cambridge, Mass.- UAlbany softball sophomore first baseman Charlise Castro was named America East Player of the Week, which was announced by the conference office on Monday, Feb. 27. Castro was named to the Eagle Classic All-Tournament Team batting a team-high .533. The Great Danes finished with a 2-3 record, coming away with wins over Jacksonville State, 6-5, and Radford, 9-2.
Castro, a Saugerties, N.Y. native, played as the designated hitter, first base, and right field position during the tournament. Over the five game span, she hit a team-leading .533 average, two homers, six RBIs, three doubles, and scored five runs.
Before Castro transferred to UAlbany, she played at Maryland-Eastern Shore where she led the team in virtually every statistical category. In 2011 for Maryland- Eastern Shore in 47 games, Castro batted .409 with 13 homeruns, 42 RBIs, 32 runs scored, 14 extra-base hits, slugged an .810 average and successfully stole 7-of-7 bases.
