UAlbany Softball Drop Its First Two Games Against North Florida and Georgia Southern

Statesboro, Ga.- UAlbany softball and North Florida began the Eagle Classic off with an old-fashion pitcher's duel that featured the Great Danes sophomore Brittany McFawn and the Osprey's freshman Kaylie Wallace. Both pitchers would begin the game striking out the side.
North Florida's Mariah Reynolds would record the game's first hit in the bottom of the second with single to left and would advance with a stolen base on the next hitter. The Great Dane's Alexa Toole would record the team's first hit with a two-out triple to center in the top of the third but would be stranded.
With the game scoreless through five, the Osprey's Marissa Thomas brought in the game's first run with a solo homer down the left field line. Following the Thomas homer, Danica Mandaro drove in two more with a two-out double to put North Florida up 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth.
In their final at-bats, the Great Danes' Vicky McFarland began the top of the seventh with single up the middle. After two quick outs, designated hitter Charlise Castro struck a two-run homer to left field to cut the deficit to one, 3-2. But North Florida's Wallace would get UAlbany's Jess Tate to ground out to short to end the game.
McFawn (0-1) went the distance giving up three runs on eight hits and recording nine strikeouts. Wallace (4-0) collected her fourth win of the season going seven strong allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven and now allowing a walk.
Then in game two against Georgia Southern, which was delayed due to bad weather conditions, UAlbany quickly fell 1-0 in the top of the second. The Eagles would play small ball to get the first run by getting the lead-off hitter Mackenzie Williams on with a walk. After a sacrifice bunt and a single up the middle, Hanna Ennis would bring in the game's first run with a sac-fly to center.
The Eagles would add onto their lead with three runs in fourth and then two insurance in the fifth to put the game out of reach at 6-0.
The Great Danes would scatter six hits in six innings with Charlise Castro and Vicky McFarland collecting two hits apiece. Allie Weiser (0-1) with a rough first start to the season went 4.2 innings with six runs on six hits while striking out five.
The Eagles' Brooke Red (3-0) went five scoreless innings scattering four hits and punching out five. Marla Thompson came in for the final two innings only allowing two hits.
UAlbany continues the Eagle Classic with two more games on Saturday beginning with North Florida at 930 am followed by Jacksonville State at 130 pm.
