Field Hockey Loses on Goal in 68th Minute at Hofstra; McConville & Voormolen Each Score

Hempstead, N.Y. - University at Albany end a two-game win streak with a 3-2 Hofstra University win in non-conference field hockey action Sunday afternoon at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.

Hofstra (7-4) began the scoring in Sunday's match in the fifth minute of the first half. Genna Kovar, scoring her eleventh goal of the season, received a pass coming across the crease from Jonel Boileau and hit the target. Play would remain neutral for the next eight minutes until Corrine McConville tallied to put the Great Danes on the board, with the assist going to Daphne Voormolen. McConville had five shots on goal in the contest.

Hofstra regained the lead in the 25th minute. Amy-Lee Levey fed a pass near the post with teammate Boileau ready to poke in the ball giving Hofstra a 2-1 lead. UAlbany would attempt to gain the equalizer before halftime as they had seven penalty corner attempts with good scoring opportunities, but could not connect.

The Great Danes effort continued early in the second stanza as Daphne Voormolen notched her fourth goal of the season on a rebound shot to tie the game at 2-2 with nearly thirty minutes remaining. Hofstra would tally the go-ahead goal in the 68th minute to finalize all scoring with Kovar's second of the game.

"Hofstra is a tough team, who has won a lot this season and scored a lot of goals," said UAlbany Head Coach Phil Sykes on Sunday's loss. "We weren't able to rebound on their late goal. The next couple of days will be focused on working out some kinks and getting ready for out next opponent."

For Hofstra, goalkeeper Amanda Heyde played 70 minutes and made seven saves. As for the Great Danes goalkeeper, Kristi Troch made seven saves.

UAlbany travels to neighboring Capital Region institution Siena College on Wednesday, September 21 for a 3:30 p.m. start time.
