- Katie Wambold hit a two-run shot, while Jess Bergin and Kristine Bill
recorded solo homers to lead UAlbany to a 6-4 win over Stony Brook in America East
Conference softball action on Sunday afternoon at Albany Field. With the win,
the Great Danes completed a three-game sweep of the Seawolves and sealed up a
share of the regular-season conference title.
UAlbany got out to a quick start,
scoring five runs in the first inning, including the homers by Wambold and
Bergin. Kylie Apostolina had a two-RBI double in the inning before getting
driven in by Wambold's long ball over the left field fence. Bergin recorded the
fifth run of the inning with a solo shot to center, getting her second home run
in as many days. Stony Brook responded with two runs in the top of the second,
scoring on a Lauren Maloney double.
The Great Danes added a single run
in the bottom of the fourth on Bill's homer to center field that led off the
inning. Stony Brook later scored two runs in the sixth on a two-run single by
Alyssa Hawley, but the Seawolves could not rally any further, despite getting
12 runs in the game.
UAlbany's Allie Weiser earned the
win in the circle, tossing four and a third innings with one strikeout.
Brittany MacFawn tossed the final two and two thirds, striking out two to earn
the save. Colleen Matthes took the loss in the circle for Stony Brook (20-29,
AE 5-13).
UAlbany (25-21, AE 14-4) finished
tied with Boston U. for the regular-season title. However, with a three-game
sweep of the Great Danes last weekend, the Terriers took the tiebreaker and
earned the rights to host the 2011 America East Softball Championship. Final
seedings and game times will be announced at a later date.
