Jessica Bergin Leads UAlbany to Doubleheader Sweep of Stony Brook in America East Play

Albany, N.Y. - Senior Jessica Bergin hit a home run and a triple in game two, while also scoring two runs in game one, leading UAlbany to a doubleheader sweep of Stony Brook in America East Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at Albany Field. The Great Danes won the first game, 5-2, before posting a 7-0 victory in the nightcap.

            UAlbany scored first in game one, as Gina Mason drove an RBI single down the left field line in the bottom of the first to send Andrianna Walraven home. The Great Danes added three runs in the third. Stony Brook pitcher Colleen Matthes issued a bases-loaded walk to Lauren Alcorn, scoring Melissa Herndon. Kristine Bill then singled into left, allowing Bergin and Kylie Apostolina to score. UAlbany tacked on its final run in the bottom of the fifth, as Bill recorded her second hit of the game, sending Bergin home for her second run of the game, giving the Great Danes a 5-0 lead.

            Stony Brook ended the shutout with two runs in sixth, as Elise Fortier hit a single into center, scoring Jessica Combs and Alyssa Hawley. UAlbany starting pitcher Brittany Schweiger closed out her complete game effort in the seventh to seal up the win for the Great Danes. Shweiger finished with nine strikeouts over seven innings. Matthes took the loss in the circle for Stony Brook, after allowing four earned runs in two and a third innings.

            In game two, the teams played three and a half scoreless innings before UAlbany got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Mason singled into left to start the inning, before Bergin smacked a triple into left field to get Mason home. The Great Danes then scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth, led by a two-RBI single by Apostolina and Bergin's three-run homer over the centerfield fence.

            Brittany MacFawn pitched a complete game for UAlbany, scattering five hits and striking out six in the shutout. Alexandra Clark took the loss for the Seawolves after allowing all seven earned runs in four and two thirds innings of action. Lauren Maloney recorded two hits for Stony Brook.

            UAlbany (24-21, 13-4) and Stony Brook (19-27, AE 5-12) will complete the three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. Prior to the start of Sunday's game, the Great Danes will honor the program's six graduating seniors.
