Le Moyne Sweeps UAlbany in Baseball Action; Mike Tirri Totals Five Hits in Twinbill

Albany, N.Y. - Ryan Mahoney went 2-for-3 with three RBI in game one, while Don Schaaf recorded three hits and two RBI in the nightcap to lead Le Moyne to a doubleheader sweep of UAlbany in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Dolphins defeated the Great Danes, 10-5, in the first game before holding off a late UAlbany rally for a 6-3 victory in game two.

In the early game, Le Moyne jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings, getting three runs in the first and four in the second. The Dolphins scored two runs in the first inning on back-to-back passed balls, before getting an RBI single by Schaaf that scored Brett Botsford. Pat Weise sent a runner home in the second with a sacrifice fly, while Botsford drove an RBI single through the left side later in the inning. The Dolphins sent the final two runs home on a single by Mahoney before UAlbany pitcher Ryan White struck the final batter out swinging to end the rally.

The Great Danes got one run back in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Kyle Crean that scored Nolan Gaige, who singled to reach base. Le Moyne responded with a single run in the top of the fourth, as Botsford scored to give the Dolphins an 8-1 advantage. After Le Moyne tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth, UAlbany scored four in the bottom half of the frame to set the final score. Josh Nethaway drove in the first two runs with a double in to right center, while Mike Tirri followed with an RBI single to right. Tirri later accounted for the final UAlbany run of the game, coming around on a fielder's choice by Josy Espinal.

Starter Brian Gauthier took the loss on the mound for UAlbany. White tossed four and two thirds innings in relief, fanning six opposing batters. Tom McDermott earned the win for Le Moyne in a five-inning performance. Tirri recorded two of UAlbany's eight hits, while three players recorded multiple hits for the Dolphins.

In the night cap, Le Moyne struck first again, scoring two runs in the second and three in the third. Brian Stinson sent the first run home with a sacrifice bunt, while a Vincent Redmond base hit sent Schaaf home. Schaff then recorded an RBI double to right, scoring Botsford in the third, before the Dolphins scored one run on a passed ball, and Stinson sent Schaaf home for the second time in the game with a base hit. UAlbany scored one run in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice hit by Jeff Welsh, but Le Moyne responded with a single run in the top of the fifth to hold onto a five-run lead.

The Great Danes attempted to rally in the bottom of the fifth, but only managed to score two runs. Ralph Rizzo scored on a Le Moyne error, before Greg Muller recorded a sacrifice fly to score Gaige. Tirri paced the UAlbany hitters once again, accounting for three of the Great Danes' six total hits.

Ed Kohout earned the win for Le Moyne (17-27), going two and two thirds inning in relief with two strikeouts. Starter Kevin Archbold took the loss for UAlbany, allowing five earned runs with two strikeouts over three innings of work.

UAlbany (17-22) will return to action over the weekend, hosting Maine in a three-game America East Conference series on Saturday and Sunday at Varsity Field.
