UAlbany Eliminates Binghamton With 4-1 Win at America East Baseball Tournament

Stony Brook, N.Y. -  Josh Nethaway went 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored to lead UAlbany to a 4-1 win over Binghamton in the first elimination game of the America East Conference Baseball Championship Tournament on Thursday, May 26 at Joe Nathan Field.

Binghamton ended the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth, as Dave Ciocchi reached on a UAlbany fielding error, then stole second. The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Peter Bregartner before UAlbany starter Zach Kraham induced a fly out to right field to end the inning. The Great Danes got baserunners on in the top of the sixth, but Binghamton's Mike Augliera worked out of the inning with a strikeout and a ground out. In the top of the seventh, UAlbany once again got the go-ahead run on second base, but Augliera issued a strikeout to Greg Muller, who was then called for interference on the catcher, ending the Great Danes' attempt to rally.

UAlbany tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the eighth. Mike Tirri knocked a double down the right field line, while Nethaway followed with an RBI single to left field. D.J. Hoagboon laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Nethaway to second before Rob Cervini recorded a base hit to put Nethaway 90 feet away. A successful bunt by Ralph Rizzo on the squeeze play scored Nethaway, putting the Great Danes on top, 2-1.

Binghamton got two runners on base in the bottom of the eighth, but Kraham struck out Justin Smucker and induced a flyout from Daniel Navares to end the threat. UAlbany added an insurance run in the top of the ninth, as lead off hitter Nolan Gaige reached on a fielding error and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Kyle Crean. Gaige then stole third and came home on an RBI single by Tirri. The Great Danes took a 4-1 advantage on a double by Nethaway that reached the centerfield wall, allowing Tirri to cross home.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Binghamton's Rob Bereszniewicz doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a ground out by C.J. Lukaszewski. Kraham, who threw a complete game, induced a ground out by Ciocchi to end the Binghamton threat. Kraham finished his nine-inning outing with nine hits allowed and five strikeouts. Augliera went seven innings for the Bearcats, allowing nine hits, while issuing three walks and fanning four.

UAlbany (20-30) will face the loser of Thursday's second game between Stony Brook and Maine on Friday at 11 a.m. Binghamton finishes the season with a 21-28 overall record.
