Boston, Mass. - Gina Mason went 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run scored to lead UAlbany to the championship game of the 2011 America East Conference Softball Championship at the BU Softball Field on Friday afternoon. The Great Danes defeated top-seeded Boston U., 4-1, on the second day of play to advance to the title game.
UAlbany scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. After Andrianna Walraven hit a lead off single, Diane MacDowell followed with a base hit of her own. Mason drove a double into deep right field, sending both baserunners home, but was called out trying to stretch the hit to a triple, ending the inning. Boston U. got one run back in the top of the second, as pinch runner Kayla Kruper made it home on Melanie Delgado's base hit.
Jess Bergin came home in the bottom of the second to give the Great Danes a 3-1 advantage, as UAlbany took advantage of a Boston U. fielding error to bring home an unearned run. With two outs in the bottom of the third, Mason recorded a base hit, and came home later in the inning on an RBI single by Alcorn, giving the Great Danes a 4-1 lead after three.
The teams played three and a half more scoreless innings, as the pitchers controlled the remainder of the game. UAlbany starter Brittany Schweiger earned the win, scattering four hits and fanning two in six innings of work. America East Conference First Team pitcher Brittany MacFawn earned the save, tossing a hitless final inning for the Great Danes. Boston U.'s Whitney Tuthill took the loss with a complete game effort, allowing three earned runs without a strikeout.
UAlbany (27-21) advances to the championship game, to be played on Saturday at 12 p.m. Boston U. (33-17) will take on the winner of the Binghamton/UMBC matchup, looking to earn the other spot in the title game.
