Baseball Drops Non-Conference Match-Up to Hofstra; Gaige & Crean Each Have Two Hits

Hempstead, N.Y. - T.J. Thomas went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI to lead Hofstra to a 10-7 win over UAlbany in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at University Field.

The Great Danes jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning. Nolan Gaige and Kyle Crean led off with back-to-back singles and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Brian Bullard. Gaige scored the first run on the game on a ground-out RBI by Pete DiResta before Crean and Greg Muller came home to score unearned runs on a Hofstra fielding error. Hofstra responded and took a one-run lead in the bottom of the frame. The Pride loaded the bases and brought two runs home on a single by Thomas. UAlbany starter Ryan White issued consecutive bases-loaded walks to score two additional runs before reliever Christ Hackett induced a fly out to end the inning.

The Great Danes came back to take a 6-4 advantage in the second. Ralph Rizzo was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and came home on a Gaige double into center. Crean then knocked an RBI single to score Rob Cervini before Gaige made it home on a fielder's choice play. Hofstra then scored single runs in the next three innings to tie the game and then regain the lead. Logan Davis recorded an RBI single in the third, before Danny Poma came home in the fourth on a UAlbany error to tie the game. The Pride took a 7-6 advantage in the fifth on an RBI single by Bobby Gazzola that scored Thomas. Hofstra added one additional run in the sixth to hold onto an 8-6 lead.

The Great Danes were able to get one run back in the seventh on an RBI single by Muller that scored Bullard, who recorded a base hit to start the inning. Hofstra sealed up the win with two more runs in the eighth on a single up the middle that scored Poma and Joe Perez.

Both teams used multiple pitchers in the game, with both starters lasting just one inning. Pat O'Connell took the loss on the mound for the Great Danes after throwing just the fifth inning. White and Kevin Cowan both recorded two strikeouts for UAlbany. Andrew Barbarino was the winner on the mound for Hofstra (6-17), while Bryan Verbitsky earned the save.

UAlbany (7-15) will return to action over the weekend, hosting Hartford in the first America East Conference series of the season. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
