Boston, Mass.
- Amy Ekart hit two grand slams to lead Boston
U. to an America East softball doubleheader sweep of UAlbany on Saturday
afternoon at BU Softball Field. BU won the first game, 7-2, before holding off
a late Great Dane rally for a 6-4 win in the nightcap.
Boston U. jumped out to a 3-0 lead in game one, as Chelsea
Kehr unleashed a three-run homer to left field that scored April Setterlund and
freshman Megan Volpano. In the top of the second, the Great Danes got two runs
back on an RBI single by Kylie Apostolina and an error that scored Melissa
Herndon. The Boston
U. offense tacked on four
runs in the fifth as Ekart smashed her grand slam.
The Great Danes managed two hits and
got a runner to third to attempt a late rally in the sixth, but Holly Floetker
forced a pop up to end the threat. Floetker, who struck out six opposing
batters in the win, got three quick outs in the seventh to end the game.
Brittany Schweiger took the loss in the circle, going five innings, fanning
five and allowing three earned runs.
UAlbany struck first in the nightcap
with one run in the first frame on an RBI single by Gina Mason. Over the next
four and a half innings, UAlbany's Brittany MacFawn and Boston U.'s
Erin Schuppert both pitched four scoreless innings until the Terriers' Brittany
Clendenny tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth. In
the bottom of the sixth inning, the Terriers took a 2-1 lead with an infield
single by Setterlund. BU then loaded the bases on a single by Kehr, which
brought Ekart to the plate, who went deep to left field for her second grand
slam of the afternoon to open up the score to 6-1.
UAlbany rallied in the top of the
seventh, scoring three runs with two outs on the board. Lauren Alcorn recorded
an RBI double to score Jess Bergin, who also recorded a double, before Kristine
Bill belted a two-run homer to left, making it a 6-4 game. Clendenny caught a
pop up in foul territory to halt the comeback.
UAlbany
(20-20, AE 11-3) and Boston
U. (29-14, AE 11-3), now
tied for first in the America East standings, will play the three-game series
finale on Sunday at noon.
