Orono, Maine - Keith Bilodeau tossed a complete-game shutout
in the first game to lead Maine to a sweep of UAlbany in an America East
Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond. The
Black Bears recorded a 3-0 win in the game one, before taking the nightcap 5-3.
Maine broke a scoreless tie to take a 2-0
lead in the bottom of the third inning. Troy Black led off the inning with a double
down the right field line before Michael Fransoso drew a walk. Both runners
advanced into scoring position with a double steal before coming home on a Joey
Martin single into center.
Tyler Patzalek completed the Black
Bears' scoring in the fourth, leading off with a single to left field. Pinch
runner Mike Connolly advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Alex Calbick and
scored when Black singled to right field.
Bilodeau scattered two hits while
striking out seven for Maine.
Dave Kubiak went six innings on the mound for UAlbany, allowing all three runs
on six hits. He struck out four batters, while walking four.
Maine jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in
the bottom of the first inning of game two. Taylor Lewis drew a walk, while Fransoso
followed with an RBI double to left center field. Fransoso scored on a base hit
by Justin Leisenheimer before Fran Whitten and Patzalek then knocked
back-to-back singles to load the bases. Calbick drew a bases loaded walk,
forcing home Leisenheimer, while Whitten scored on Colin Gay's single to left.
Patzalek accounted for the fifth run of the inning on a base hit by Black.
UAlbany avoided its second shutout
of the day, scoring a run in the top of the fifth. Joe Ilacqua walked, advanced
to second on a wild pitch and scored on a Nolan Gaige double to left center. The
Great Danes added two runs in the top of the eighth inning, in an attempt for a
late rally. Gaige drew a walk and scored when Kyle Crean doubled to right
center. Crean, who advanced to third base on a wild pitch, came home on a
sacrifice fly ball by Josh Nethaway.
Jeffrey Gibbs went six innings on
the mound for Maine,
allowing a pair of hits and striking out six. Shaun Coughlin picked up the save,
going two innings without allowing a hit and striking out four Great Danes. Kasceim
Graham scattered eight hits in seven innings of work for UAlbany.
UAlbany
(13-20, AE 5-4) and Maine
(15-20, AE 5-4) will conclude the three-game series with a single game on
Monday, starting at 2 p.m.
