Albany, N.Y.
- Melissa Herndon drove a two-run homer to center, while Andrianna Walraven and
Jess Bergin smashed solo home runs to lead UAlbany to a 9-0 win in five innings,
completing the three-game sweep of UMBC in America East Conference softball
action on Saturday afternoon at Albany Field.
The Great Danes took a 4-0 lead in
the first inning. Katie Wambold drove in two runs with a double into center
field, scoring Diane MacDowell and Walraven. Kylie Apostolina sent Wambold home
on a ground out to short, while Bergin recorded her first hit of the day with
an RBI single to score Gina Mason. UAlbany added two runs in the second inning,
as Walraven drove a ball over the center field fence and Mason came home later
in the frame. Bergin's lead-off homer in the third gave UAlbany a 7-0 lead.
The Great Danes scored the final two
runs of the game in the bottom of the fourth on Herndon's long ball to center
that scored Mason. Herndon and Bergin both went 2-for-2 on the day with two RBI
apiece. Apostolina and Wambold also drove in two runs.
UAlbany's Brittany MacFawn earned
the win in the circle after a three-inning performance. MacFawn scattered four
hits and struck out three without issuing a walk. Allie Weiser tossed the final
two innings, allowing just one hit and fanning one. Stephanie Weigman and
Heather Brown split time in the circle for UMBC (20-21, AE 5-10), with Weigman
taking the loss.
UAlbany (20-18, AE 11-1) will return
to action on Tuesday, visiting crosstown-rival Siena for a non-conference
double-header at 3 p.m.
