UAlbany Baseball Drops Both Ends of America East Doubleheader to Binghamton

Albany, N.Y. - Binghamton used high-scoring late innings to sweep an America East Conference baseball doubleheader from UAlbany on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Bearcats claimed a 9-5 win in eight innings in game one before posting a 13-11 victory in the nightcap.

Both teams used strong pitching performances to set a 2-2 tie through seven innings of game one. UAlbany's Zach Kraham struck out 11 opposing batters in the loss, while Binghamton's Jay Lynch earned the win, allowing just two runs and fanning seven.

UAlbany scored the tying run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings, as pinch hitter Mike Tirri drove an RBI single through the right side to score pinch runner Josy Espinal, who replaced Josh Nethaway on the base path. Nethaway led off the inning with a double to put the tying run in scoring position. However, Binghamton came out firing in the top of the eighth, scoring seven runs to hold a 7-2 advantage. Peter Bregartner recorded an RBI single, before scoring on a wild pitch later in the inning. Mike Danaher and Bill Bereszniewicz both smacked RBI doubles, while Bereszniewicz also accounted for the Bearcats' final run of the inning, coming home on an RBI groundout by Daniel Nevares.

The Great Danes attempted a comeback in the bottom half of the frame, but could only get three runs back to set the final score. First baseman Greg Muller and catcher D.J. Hoagboon recorded singles, with Muller coming home on a ground out by Espinal. UAlbany got two runs across home plate on a Binghamton fielding error, before reliever Alex Adami induced a fly out to end the game.

Binghamton (13-17, AE 5-2) came out firing in game two, scoring three runs in the first inning. Two runs came home on a single by Jeff Skelhorne-Gross. The Bearcats added a fourth run in the top of the second on a ground out by Dave Ciocchi that scored Bereszniewicz. UAlbany came roaring back in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs to take a 6-4 advantage. Nolan Gaige sent Rob Cervini home to start the rally. Pete DiResta then doubled into right center to send two runs home, while Nethaway and Muller also knocked out doubles to score single runs. Muller accounted for the final run of the inning, crossing home plate on a single by Hoagboon.

Binghamton got one run back in the top of the fifth, but UAlbany responded with a run in the bottom of the frame to keep a two-run lead. The Bearcats then put three runs on the board in the top of the sixth to regain the lead, before the Great Danes added four runs to their total in the bottom half of the inning. Nethaway, who finished with three hits in the game, singled through the right side to send two runners home, giving the Great Danes an 11-8 advantage.

However, Binghamton got an RBI double from Bregartner and a two-run single from Skelhorne-Gross before John Howell single into right field to score the fifth Bearcat run of the inning to give Binghamton the come-from-behind win. Reliever Chris Nagorski picked up the win on the mound, throwing four and a third innings and striking out three, holding the Great Danes scoreless in the bottom of the seventh as the field grew dark. Ryan White took the loss, allowing two earned runs to score in the final inning.

UAlbany (12-18, AE 5-2) will return to action on Tuesday, visiting Le Moyne for a non-conference match-up.
