Orono, Maine - UAlbany used four hits to score five runs in the top of the eighth inning to lead the Great Danes to a 12-7 win in the nightcap against Maine on Saturday, April 16 at Kessock Field. The Great Danes also posted a 3-1 win in the first game of the America East Conference doubleheader.
     The Great Danes broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third frame, scoring Andrianna Walraven on Katie Wambold's RBI single to left field. UAlbany added a single run in the fourth, as outfielder Jess Bergin belted a home run over the center field fence.
Maine would battle back in the fifth, as Jennifer Eberhardt struck a home run to left field. UAlbany would add the final tally, as Kristine Bill singled to right field to score Bergin, who recorded a base hit and stole second.
     Pitcher Brittany Schwieger allowed just four hits and issued five strikeouts in five innings. Brittany MacFawn, who came on in relief in the sixth, was credited with the save by striking out one in two innings pitched. Maine's Beth Spoehr took the loss in the circle, fanning four in the complete-game performance.
     The Great Danes started the scoring early in the second game, as Wambold singled to left field to plate Walraven. First baseman Gina Mason tallied an RBI with a double to left field. UAlbany would add three more runs in the top of the fourth, led by a two-RBI single to center by Kylie Apostolina. Maine totaled two hits and two runs over the first three innings before scoring three in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kali Burnham, Eberhardt and Meghan McLain recorded three straight hits to bring the Black Bears within 7-5. Maine would tie the contest in the bottom of the seventh on RBI hits by Hilary Kane and Jenny MacDowell.
     UAlbany came out firing in the extra inning as the Great Danes scored five runs on four hits. Diane MacDowell and Mason recorded base hits that produced runs, while Walraven's single pushed across a pair of runs to put the Great Danes ahead. 
     The Great Danes and Maine each accounted for 13 hits. Pitchers MacFawn, Allie Weiser and Schwieger combined for the win. Schwieger was credited with her sixth victory, striking out five opposing batters, while Maine starter Kylie Sparks took the loss. UAlbany (16-18, AE 7-1) and the Black Bears wrap up the three-game series on Sunday at 12 noon.
