Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Brett Houseal recorded three quick outs in the top of the ninth to keep the Great Danes from completing a comeback and leading Marist to a 6-4 win over UAlbany in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at McCann Field.
Marist scored first in the bottom of the second on an RBI groundout by Dan Zlotnick. The Red Foxes then scored two runs in the bottom of the third and fourth to hold 5-0 lead. Catcher Ricky Pacione drove in two runs in the third with a single up the middle, while Michael Gallic came home on a passed ball in the fourth before Nick McQuail was brought home on a sacrifice fly.
UAlbany then scored single runs in each of the next four innings to attempt a comeback. Josy Espinal recorded a triple in the fifth and crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Ralph Rizzo. In the sixth, Pete DiResta, who finished the game with two hits and one run scored, walked to start off the inning, and recorded an unearned run on a passed ball. A Marist error allowed Josh Nethaway to score in the seventh, while Mike Tirri led off the eighth with a double and came home on Rizzo's second sacrifice fly of the game. Marist was able to hold onto a two-run lead, however, scoring a single run in the seventh.
Both teams used multiple pitchers in the game. UAlbany starter Brian Gauthier took the loss on the mound after a three-inning performance. Relievers Terry McFadden and Kevin Cowan each recorded single strikeouts in their outings. Chris Bielak got the win for Marist (22-9), while Houseal earned the save.
UAlbany (10-16) will return to action over the weekend with a four-game America East Conference series against Binghamton at Varsity Field.
