Softball Sweeps Cornell With Nightcap Shutout in Non-League Doubleheader at Albany Field

Albany, N.Y. - A three-run homer by Katie Wambold capped off a 12-run third inning as UAlbany defeated Cornell, 13-1, in five innings in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Albany Field. The Great Danes also defeated the Big Red, 7-0, in the nightcap.

Cornell broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third frame, scoring one run on an RBI double by Jenny Edwards. UAlbany's bats came out firing in the bottom of the inning as the Great Danes racked up 12 runs. Shortstop Andrianna Walraven recorded a single and a double in the inning, driving in three runs, while scoring twice. Gina Mason knocked a two-run triple, while Lauren Alcorn also tallied two RBI with a single up the middle. Catcher Kylie Apostolina and right fielder Kristine Bill also accounted for RBI in the inning, before Wambold stepped up to the plate with two runners on base and smashed the ball over the outfield fence. The Great Danes finished with eight hits in the inning.

UAlbany added a single run in the fourth, as Diane MacDowell singled up the middle to score Kayla Cilley and set the final score. The Great Danes knocked out 14 hits over four innings, while pitcher Allie Weiser allowed just five hits by Cornell and issued two strikeouts. Cornell's Lauren Marx took the loss in the circle, fanning two over two and a third innings.

The Great Danes scored all seven runs of the second game in the first two innings, forcing Cornell to bring in left-handed reliever Jenna Stoller, who shut down the UAlbany bats. The Great Danes tacked on four runs in the bottom of the first, getting two RBI from Apostolina, who singled into right field. Walraven drove in one run with a base hit to left center, while Mason came home on a ground out RBI by Melissa Herndon.

In the second inning, Wambold tallied her fourth RBI of the day with a single that scored MacDowell. Mason then drove in two runs with a base hit through the right side, sending Wambold and Walraven across home plate. Pitchers Brittany MacFawn and Brittany Schweiger combined for the shutout, striking out nine opposing batters and scattering three hits. Starter Alyson Onyon took the loss for Cornell (16-16-1).

UAlbany (14-18) will return to action on Saturday, traveling to Maine for a three-game America East Conference series.
