Dover, Del. - UAlbany softball swept two games at the
Delaware State Tournament on Saturday, defeating Colgate, 1-0, and Morgan
State, 3-0, before the tournament was ended early because of impending weather
conditions in Dover.
In game one, the Great Danes were able to take advantage of two Colgate errors
to score their only run. In the third inning, UAlbany's Diane MacDowell reached
on a Colgate fielding error and was advanced to second on a ground out by Andrianna
Walraven. MacDowell then stole third and crossed home plate on a throwing error
to score the only run needed.
Jess
Bergin had the only hit for the Great Danes. Brittany MacFawn earned the win on
the mound with a complete-game performance. MacFawn struck out 11 Raider
batters and scattered just three hits in the game.
In the
second game of the day, UAlbany took a 1-0 lead in the second and tacked on two
additional runs in the fifth for the second shutout win of the day. Katie
Wambold started off the second inning with a single through the left side, and
was driven home on an RBI double by Lauren Alcorn to give the Great Danes a
one-run advantage.
UAlbany
extended its lead in the fifth, as MacDowell singled with a bunt to third base,
which allowed Allison Haan to score. MacDowell recorded her second stolen base
of the day to move into scoring position and made it home on a sacrifice fly by
Gina Mason. Allie Weiser earned the win on the mound with the Great Danes'
second complete-game performance of the tournament, striking out six without
issuing a walk or allowing a run in seven innings of action.
UAlbany (5-13) will return to action
on Tuesday with a non-conference doubleheader at Bryant.
