UAlbany Drops 7-4 Decision to St. John's in Non-Conference Baseball Action

Queens, N.Y. - Kevin Kilpatrick went seven and a third innings on the mound for St. John's, while Paul Karmas recorded a solo homer, to lead the Red Storm to a 7-4 victory over UAlbany in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon.

UAlbany got out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on two unearned runs. Pete DiResta led off with a single and scored on an error by St. John's left fielder that also allowed Josh Nethaway to reach second base. Nethaway was driven in by Josy Espinal to give the Great Danes the early lead. The Red Storm responded in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Joe Panik that scored Matt Wessinger. St. John's then knotted the score at 2-2 as Pat Talbut, who reached on an error, came home on a sacrifice fly.

The Red Storm scored single runs in the third and fourth to take a two-run lead. Talbut added a second unearned run in the third frame before Karmas knocked a lead-off home run over the left centerfield fence to give St. John's a 4-2 advantage. The Red Storm added another pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Panik knocked a triple into left that scored Talbut, before coming home himself on a base hit by Jeremy Baltz.

Nethaway sent another run home for the Great Danes in the top of the eighth to cut the St. John's lead to 6-3. The freshman catcher sent a double into centerfield to score D.J. Hoagboon, who reached on a fielder's choice. The Red Storm were able to hold onto a four-run advantage heading into the final inning, however, as Wessinger knocked an RBI single to score pinch runner Kevin Grove, keeping St. John's ahead, 7-3.

UAlbany attempted to mount a comeback in the top of the ninth, loading the bases on a single and consecutive walks issued by St. John's closer Matt Carasiti. Jeff Welsh came home on an RBI single by Nolan Gaige, but Carasiti induced a foul out and struck out his final two batters faced to seal the win for the Red Storm.

Kevin Archbold earned the start on the mound for the Great Danes, going four and two-thirds innings on the mound before being relieved by Matt Dybus. Kilpatrick fanned four for St. John's (7-8), while Eddie Medina struck out two in two and a thirds innings of work.

UAlbany (4-8) will face St. John's again over the weekend at Holy Cross, while also taking on the Crusaders in two non-conference games.
