Hayward, Calif.-
Boise State
softball swept a doubleheader against UAlbany, on the final day of the Santa Clara
Bronco Classic Sunday afternoon the Alden E. Oliver Sports Park.. The Broncos won the first game 6-3 and took the
second 8-1.
In the first game, UAlbany
snapped the Broncos' scoreless innings streak at 41 in the seventh inning,
attempting to rally back from a 6-0 deficit in the bottom of the final frame.
Gina Mason led off with a single, and was replaced on the base path by Alison
Haan. After Haan advanced on a passed ball, Jessica Bergin was walked, before Boise State
pitcher Ashley Collier loaded the bases, walking Adrianna Walraven. Kylie Apostolina
was hit by a pitch to send the Great Danes first run across home, before Lauren
Alcorn knocked a single through the left side for another UAlbany run. Walraven
tacked on the Great Danes' final run on a ground out, before Aubray Zell fanned
the final UAlbany batter to end the rally.
Zell, who started
the game and then returned to finish out the seventh inning, struck out 12
UAlbany batters for the win in the circle. Allie Weiser started the game in the
circle for UAlbany, combining with Brittany MacFawn for five strikeouts in the
game. Devon Bridges led the Bronco offense with three hits and three RBI.
Boise State (14-8) pitcher Allie Crump went the distance in the circle in the
nightcap, allowing just four hits and recording 14 strikeouts as she guided the
Broncos to their 12th-consecutive victory. Crump recorded 12 of the first 15
outs via strikeout.
The Broncos (14-8)
took advantage of two Albany
errors to score the first three runs of the game before breaking it open with
five runs in the fifth inning. UAlbany recorded its lone run of the game in the
top of the frame to pull the score within two on an RBI single by Walraven. The
Great Danes had the go-ahead run on first, but left the bases loaded after one
of Crump's two strikeouts in the inning.
Every Bronco who
came to the plate in the second game recorded a hit and eight different players
scored. Mason recorded two of UAlbany's four hits in the game.
UAlbany (1-7) will return to action next weekend at
the George Mason Cherry Blossom Classic, facing Cornell and George Mason on
Friday afternoon.
