UAlbany Falls to Maine, 4-3 OT, in America East Opener; Christina Patrick Tallies Two Goals

Orono, Maine - Daphne Voormolen tallied off a rebound to push the game into an overtime frame, but No. 15 University of Maine would score in the 73rd minute to take a 4-3 overtime victory over No. 17 University at Albany in the opening weekend of America East Conference play Saturday afternoon.

Maine (11-1, 1-0 America East) scored in the first minute of the game as Jocelyn Mitchell took a pass from Holly Stewart to tally her first of two goals in the match. The Black Bears would score once more in the half off a tip-in from Kelly Newton.

UAlbany (8-4, 0-1 America East) began the comeback in the 48th minute as freshman Amy Nicklin sent a pass from the arch to Christina Patrick who tallied her eighth goal of the season.  Just three minutes later, the Great Danes tallied again on Patrick's high shot into the right corner with the assist to Chloe Pachuilo, who garnered her first collegiate point.

The Black Bears would regain the lead in the 56th minute as Mitchell scored her second of the game. After a UAlbany timeout with eight minutes to go, the team would get three penalty corner attempts as they looked for the equalizer. Daphne Voormolen was able to hit the target in the 67th minute, bringing the score to 3-3, as she tallied off a rebound.

In the 73rd minute players were scrambling around the UAlbany goal, but Maine's Kelly Newton was able to find an open spot to tip in Holly Newton's shot for the 4-3 overtime victory.

"We got off to a slow start to a very good Maine team, which cost us the 2-0 Maine lead at halftime," said UAlbany Head Coach Phil Sykes. "Fortunately, we came into the second half with a lot of passion and determination to find the momentum in the comeback to force overtime. Today was a tough conference loss."

UAlbany held a 6-1 penalty corner advantage, while Maine had a slight edge in shots, 11-9. In goal, Black Bear's Brittany Fleck had three saves, while Kristi Troch made six stops for the Great Danes.

The Great Danes will play again on Wednesday, October 5th at No. 5 Syracuse, before a four-game home stretch.
