Softball Posts 5-4 Road Win Against UMBC; UAlbany Finishes Fourth in A-East Standings

Baltimore, Md. - Senior Michelle Connors went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in leading UAlbany to a 5-4 victory over UMBC in America East Conference softball action on Sunday, May 9 at the UMBC Softball Stadium. The Great Danes, who have won five of their last six games, will be the fourth seed for this week's conference postseason tournament.
UAlbany (20-21, AE 9-8) got on the board in the top of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Connors drew a two-out walk and Gina Mason singled through the left side to get things started, and Kat Smith followed with a single up the middle that plated Connors.
UMBC, which honored its four seniors prior to the game, went ahead by tallying a run in each of the first two innings. The Retrievers tied the game when Emily Thompson scored standing up on a fielder's choice play and took the lead on a leadoff homer by Julia Culotta to start the second.
Connors, who registered four RBIs in her team's 7-3 nightcap victory, stayed hot at the plate by driving in three runs over the next three frames to give the visitors a 4-2 advantage. She singled up the middle to tie the game in the third before belting a double down the line in left with two outs in the fifth inning.
After the Retrievers cut the lead to one by plating a run in the sixth, UAlbany used daring and aggressive baserunning to push across what would stand as the winning tally in the top of the seventh and final frame. Andrianna Walraven singled to center, stole second and moved to third on a hit up the middle by Diane MacDowell. Connors then came up and hit a grounder to the shortstop, reaching on the fielder's choice as Walraven was gunned down at home. The senior made a rush for second base to draw a throw from the catcher, which allowed MacDowell to make it home.
UMBC (25-24, AE 6-12) attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh, beginning with Kaela Mason's home run to start the inning. The Retrievers put runners on the corners with two outs, but Marissa Powell recovered and fanned Lauren O'Malley to end the game.
UAlbany's Allie Weiser got the nod to start and picked up the victory to improve to 5-5. She allowed five hits, three runs and fanned two batters while walking just one in six innings of work. Powell picked up her second save of the season by holding off the Retrievers in the final frame. She recorded two strikeouts. UMBC's Heather Brown went six and one-third innings and dropped to 9-7 with the loss. The freshman yielded 10 hits and five runs while striking out two hitters and issuing one walk. She was relieved by Stephanie Weigman, who recorded a strikeout.

Paw Prints: The Great Danes earned the number four seed for the America East Conference Tournament, which will be hosted by second-seeded Maine from May 13-15 ... Boston University, which has clinched the regular season title, declined the right to host due to conflicts with its graduation ... UAlbany will play in the conference postseason tournament for the ninth consecutive season ... Michelle Connors went 5-for-10 with three hits for extra bases and seven RBIs in the three-game series this weekend ... She also hit her 35th career double in the fifth inning and needs just four more to break the school record of 38, which is held by Kelly Ogden ... The senior is batting .529 over the last five games, leading the Great Danes to a 4-1 record in that span.
