UAlbany Falls to Stony Brook in America East Conference Baseball Championship

Vestal, N.Y. - Third-seeded Stony Brook defeated fourth-seeded UAlbany, 4-2, in the final game of the America East Conference Tournament at Varsity Field on Friday afternoon. The Great Danes advanced to the sixth game of the double elimination tournament after ousting top-seeded Binghamton by a 7-4 score earlier in the day.

Stony Brook got on the board first in the second game, getting one run across on a UAlbany throwing error in the second. The Great Danes tied the game in the top of the third, loading the bases with one out on back-to-back singles and a walk. Nolan Gaige crossed home on a sacrifice fly by Brendan Rowland for UAlbany's first run of the game.

Stony Brook broke the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh on back-to-back home runs. Pat Cantwell drove a two-run shot to left field, followed by a solo homer by Pat Cantwell that put the Seawolves ahead, 4-1, with just one out on the board. Gaige attempted to start a rally for the Great Danes in the top of the ninth, smashing a solo home run over the fence in right centerfield to pull UAlbany within 4-2. Stony Brook reliever William Carmona then took the mound to close out the game, inducing a fly out to punch the Seawolves' ticket to the NCAA Tournament.

The Seawolves' Adam Brown threw eight and two thirds innings with four strikeouts, scattering seven hits in the effort. UAlbany's Kasceim Graham went six and two thirds innings, while Brian Gauthier got the final out of the eighth inning for the Great Danes. Graham struck out three, while giving up seven hits.

Binghamton, who was the visiting team on the scoreboard, sent the first run home in the top of the first inning of the day's first game. Joe Charron knocked an RBI single down the left field line to score C.J. Lukaszewski, who also recorded a single to get on base. The Great Danes then turned a double play to end the inning.

UAlbany took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second, as Rowland and Kyle Crean completed a double steal, followed by a Binghamton throwing error which allowed Rowland, who was an all-tournament team selection, to make it across home plate. Crean followed with the Great Danes' second run of the game on a ground out by Greg Muller. After Binghamton tied the game in the top of the fourth, UAlbany responded in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead. With two outs, Crean drove a triple to left center before coming home on an RBI single up the middle by Mike Tirri, putting the Great Danes up by one run, 3-2.

Binghamton tied the game and then took a one-run lead in the top of the fifth frame. Charron led off with a single, and came home on a wild pitch, which also allowed Peter Bregartner to advance into scoring position. Bregartner, who singled in his at bat, crossed home plate on a ground out by Mike Thompson. UAlbany responded in the bottom of the next inning, tying the game at 4-4 on a lead-off homer by catcher Ralph Keppler.

The Great Danes took a 7-4 advantage in the bottom of the seventh. Gaige scored the first run of the inning on a Binghamton fielding error before two runs came across on a base hit by Crean, who went 4-for-4 in an all-tournament team performance. Reliever Greg Lutton earned the win in his second appearance of the weekend, going four and two thirds innings on the mound.

UAlbany (12-39) will face Binghamton for the second time in three days in an elimination game on Friday at 11 a.m. The winner will advance to take on Stony Brook at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
