Baltimore, Md. - Shortstop Kyle Crean knocked a two-run homer to cap off a seven-run fifth inning, leading UAlbany to a 9-5 win over UMBC in America East Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon. The Great Danes dropped the first game of the doubleheader to the Retrievers by a score of 3-1.
After falling behind 3-1 in the third inning of the nightcap, UAlbany's offense exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning. The Great Danes recorded three straight hits, including RBI singles by Brendan Rowland and Pete Eichner, and a double by Ralph Keppler that sent one runner home. With two outs, Ralph Rizzo knocked out an RBI double down the right field line to score Keppler before Crean's home run sailed out to right to bring the Great Danes back to the top of the order. Sean Swetnam got the last out for the Retrievers to end the rally.
UMBC scored two in the bottom half of the inning, but UAlbany added an insurance run in the sixth to hold onto the win. Reliever Kevin Bartlett earned the win after four and a third innings. Right-hander Kevin Clark took the loss for UMBC after four and a third frames of work with four strikeouts.
In the early game, UAlbany took a quick lead in the first inning behind an RBI single to left by Brian Bullard. However, UMBC's Max Himmelstein drove a three-run shot over the left field fence in the bottom of the frame to give the Retrievers the lead. A pitcher's duel kept the score at 3-1 for the remaining six innings.
Dave Kubiak threw his second complete game of the season for the Great Danes, striking out eight while scattering five hits over six innings of work. Lefty Ed Back earned the win for UMBC with a complete game of his own, fanning three.
UAlbany (7-29, AE 6-6) and UMBC (9-26, AE 4-8) will complete the four-game series on Sunday with a doubleheader slated to start at 1 p.m.
