Softball Swept by Manhattan in Non-Conference Twinbill; Powell Throws Gem in Opener

Riverdale, N.Y. - Jaci Rahey hit a two-out single to plate the game's only run in the opener and Ashley Rampino clubbed a two-run homer in the nightcap as Manhattan swept a non-conference softball doubleheader against UAlbany on Tuesday, April 13 at Gaelic Park. The Jaspers outlasted the Great Danes to win the early game, 1-0, before rallying from three runs down to take the second by an 8-5 decision.
In game one, the Jaspers plated the game's only run in the bottom of the first inning after the Great Danes stranded two runners in the top of the frame. Kristina Walraven, the identical twin sister of UAlbany's Andrianna Walraven, doubled to right center and advanced to third on a passed ball to get things going. Marissa Powell fanned the next two batters, but Rahey singled to plate the junior centerfielder before the third out could be recorded.
UAlbany's best chance to score came in the third inning. Diane MacDowell drew a leadoff walk, stole second and advanced to third when Andrianna Walraven flew out to right. Nicole Kothe, who had two of the team's five hits in the game, tried to bunt home MacDowell from third base, but the squeeze attempt failed. The Great Danes had at least one base runner in the last four frames as Powell continued to toss a gem in the circle. However, the Jaspers got out of every jam unscathed to survive and post the one-run victory.
Manhattan's Erika Sullivan emerged as the winner in the pitcher's duel and improved her record to 7-4 this season. She allowed five hits and registered three strikeouts and three walks while hurling her fourth shutout of the season. UAlbany's Powell dropped to 4-8 with the loss despite surrendering just three hits and one run which was unearned. The senior, who has gone 12 consecutive innings without surrendering an earned run, fanned six batters and issued only one walk.
UAlbany put three runs on the board with one swing of the bat in the fourth inning of the nightcap. Gina Mason hit a leadoff single to right field. The first baseman was then sacrificed over to second by Kristine Bill and advanced to third on a passed ball. After Bailey Van Deest drew a one-out walk, Kat Smith blasted a three-run homer over the fence in center to score Mason and pinch runner Alison Haan.
Manhattan (11-13), which had dropped seven straight games to UAlbany entering the doubleheader, rallied to take the lead by scoring eight times in the bottom of the fifth inning. Rampino homered to cap the offensive outburst in the frame that saw four different batters drive in two runs.
The Great Danes got one run back in the top of the sixth. Lindsey Stout and Kylie Apostolina each reached on errors before Diane MacDowell hit an infield single to load the bases with one out. Stout scored on the next play to close the gap to four on a groundout to short by Andrianna Walraven. The Great Danes loaded the bases again when Kothe drew a two-out walk, but Rampino got out of trouble by inducing a flyout to left field on the next play. Mason hit her team-leading sixth home run of the season in the final inning to seal the final outcome.
Manhattan's Melissa Donnelly, who started the nightcap, gave up six hits and three runs in four innings of work. The junior also finished with two walks and a strikeout. Rampino threw three frames of relief, earning the victory to boost her record to 2-5. She gave up two hits, two runs, including one which was earned, while fanning two hitters. UAlbany's Allie Weiser suffered the loss and fell to 4-5 this spring. She recorded four strikeouts while allowing nine hits and eight runs.
UAlbany (13-16) resumes America East Conference action this weekend when it hosts Maine. The teams are slated to play a doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 17 at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, Apr. 18 at 12 p.m.
