Softball Drops Both Games of America East Doubleheader to First-Place Boston University

Albany, N.Y. - Emily Roesch belted a two-run homer which would stand as the game-winning hit in the opener and Whitney Tuthill hurled a one-hit shutout in the nightcap as Boston University swept UAlbany in an America East Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday, April 10 at Albany Field. The Terriers held off a rally by the Great Danes to take game one, 4-3, before winning the second by an 11-0 score in five innings due to the eight-run rule.
The first game started as a pitcher's duel between BU's Cassidi Hardy and UAlbany's Leah McIntosh. Erica Casacci's single up the middle in the first was the only hit registered between the teams through the first three innings of play.
Boston U. (20-12, AE 5-0), the defending conference tournament champion, pulled ahead by scoring twice in the fifth. After Roesch was caught in a rundown while initially trying to score for the frame's second out, Casacci hit double down the left field line to score Rachel Hebert and Tuthill. The Terriers doubled their lead an inning later on a two-run homer by Roesch which barely graced over the fence in left.
UAlbany (12-14, AE 4-4) attempted to make a fierce rally by plating three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the BU lead to one. With two outs and Kristine Bill on first, Gina Mason doubled to deep left center to put the Great Danes on the board. After Kat Smith was hit by a pitch, Bergin blasted a bases-clearing double to score Mason and Alison Haan, who entered the game as a pinch runner.
Kylie Apostolina drew a walk to keep the inning alive before a wild pitch allowed the freshman and Bergin to advance an extra base. With the tying run at third and the go-ahead at second, Bailey Van Deest flied out to left to end the inning.
After Leah McIntosh retired the side in order in the top of the seventh, Bill gave the Great Danes a chance to at least force extra innings by belting a two-out double down the left field line. However, Hebert, the first baseman, made a diving catch on a foul ball in front of the BU dugout to end the game.
BU's Hardy improved her ledger to 12-4 this season by going the distance and striking out six Great Dane hitters. She allowed five hits, three runs and issued two walks. UAlbany's McIntosh fell to 5-3 by suffering the loss. She gave up six hits and four runs while issuing five walks and fanning five.
Boston U. found holes and gaps in UAlbany's defense to jump out to a 5-0 lead in the opening inning of game two. After Rentler's bloop single to center put the visitors on the board, Roesch and Taylor Cowan each drove in a pair of runs by doubling down the right field line and singling to center, respectively. The visitors added three more runs in the third and fifth frames to put the game out of reach, which was capped by April Setterlund's two-run homer that bounced off the scoreboard in left center.
BU's Tuthill earned the victory to boost her record to 6-2 this season. She surrendered only one hit, which came with one out in the bottom of the fifth, and registered six strikeouts without yielding a walk in five innings. UAlbany's Marissa Powell was tagged with the loss and dropped to 3-7. She recorded two strikeouts, but yielded five hits and five runs in one inning of work. Weiser relieved Powell for the last four innings, surrendering six hits and six runs, including three which were earned. The freshman struck out three hitters and issued only one walk.
UAlbany and BU, which have combined to win six of the last eight America East tournament titles, will wrap up the three-game weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
