Queens, N.Y.  - Designated hitter Paul Karmas recorded three hits, including a three-run homer, scored two runs and drove in seven to lead St. John's to an 18-8 win over UAlbany in non-conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Kaiser Stadium.

            UAlbany struck first, as Brendan Rowland accounted for an unearned run in the first inning. St. John's responded with three runs behind Karmas' homer in the first and added another five runs in the second. The Red Storm recorded four straight base hits in the frame, while Greg Hopkins and Jeremy Baltz knocked in two runs each with RBI-singles.

            The Great Danes attempted to start a comeback in the fourth, scoring four runs on a grand slam by freshman second baseman Brian Bullard. However, St. John's added two runs in the fourth before producing its second five-run inning in the bottom of the fifth. Karmas drove in two more runs in the frame on an RBI single through the right side.

            Bullard, who finished with four hits and five RBI, sent another run home for the Great Danes in the sixth with a single. Rowland added two runs to the UAlbany total later in the inning, knocking a single through the right side to score Bullard and Gaige. St. John's wrapped up its scoring in the bottom of the frame, as Karmas drove a two-run double down the left field line. Miguel Valcarcel also scored in the inning, coming home on an RBI single by Jimmy Parque.

            Greg Lutton took the loss on the mound for the Great Danes, who had five different pitchers see action on the mound. While the UAlbany offense recorded 10 hits in the game, St. John's offense would not be stopped, as the Red Storm produced 21 hits. St. John's starter Bruce Kern earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the season.

            UAlbany (1-11) will return to action against the Red Storm on Sunday for the series finale at 1 p.m.
