UAlbany Baseball Splits America East Conference Doubleheader With Stony Brook

Stony Brook, N.Y. ? Senior catcher Ryan Gugel went 2-for-4 with two hits, including a double, scoring one run and driving in two more to lead UAlbany to a 5-4 first-game win over Stony Brook in an America East Conference baseball doubleheader at University Field on Saturday afternoon. The Seawolves recorded a 16-3 victory in the nightcap.

Game one was scoreless until the top of the third, when UAlbany's Brendan Rowland singled through the left side to score Sean Donovan, who drew a walk to get on base. The Seawolves tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Chad Marshall led off the frame with a base hit and later scored on an RBI-single by Steven Mazurcco.

The Great Danes added four runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Gary Pitcheralle hit a lead off single and advanced to third on a double by Rowland. Ryan Gugel followed with a double of his own, sending both baserunners across home plate. Gugel advanced to third on a Stony Brook fielding error and added a third run for UAlbany as he rounded the bases on a sacrifice fly by Mike Tirri. Sophomore Kyle Crean drove the Great Danes third double of the inning into right, scoring center fielder Dave West, who reached on an error and stole second.

Stony Brook pulled within one run, 5-4, in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Thode drove a solo homer over the left field fence before Pat Cantwell recorded a two-RBI single up the middle, scoring Michael Tansey and Mazurcco. Closer Sean Gregory took over on the mound in the bottom of the seventh and got three quick outs to earn the save and seal the first-game win for the Great Danes. Sophomore Dave Kubiak earned the win on the mound, going 5.2 innings with four strikeouts. Tyler Johnson took the loss for Stony Brook, allowing three earned runs while striking out six in 4.2 innings of work.

The Seawolves bounced back in game two, scoring three runs in the first and two in the second to take a quick 5-0 lead. Tansey recorded a two-RBI double in the first to follow Mazzurco's base hit that scored one run. Marshall and Robert Dyer each recorded RBI singles in the second to give Stony Brook the early advantage.

UAlbany broke up the shutout in the fourth on a two-out, two-run homer by Pete Eichner that scored Crean, who dropped a single to the shortstop to get on base. The Seawolves offense would not be slowed, however, as they added a single run in the bottom half of the inning and exploded for six runs in the fifth. Stony Brook recorded five of the team's 20 hits in the frame, including RBI-doubles by Marshall and Dyer.

Seawolves pitcher Mike Errigo did not give the UAlbany offense a chance in the sixth or seventh innings, but received plenty of backup from his team at the plate, as Stony Brook added four more runs in the bottom of the seventh. The Seawolves scored their first run of the frame on a UAlbany error, and added another on a wild pitch. Michael Stephan knocked an RBI single through the right side and Chris Maier followed with a shot through the same gap to finish up the Stony Brook scoring.

UAlbany was able to add one additional run in the top of the eighth and Eichner drove in his third run of the day with a sacrifice fly that sent Gugel home. Starter Josh Willimott took the loss on the mound for the Great Danes, as he allowed seven hits while striking out two opposing batters. Errigo earned the win for Stony Brook, fanning 11 in seven innings of work. Jordan Purington threw two innings of relief, striking out four UAlbany hitters.

UAlbany (16-22, AE 8-6) and Stony Brook (19-17, AE 8-6) will play a second doubleheader on Sunday, starting at 12:30 p.m.
