UAlbany Baseball Drops Both Ends of America East Doubleheader With Binghamton

Albany, N.Y. ? Jim Calderone went 2-for-4 for in game one and 3-for-6 in game two, scoring three runs and driving in four more to lead Binghamton to a doubleheader sweep of UAlbany in America East Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Bearcats recorded a 13-3 win in the first game and an 18-9 victory in the nightcap to go 3-1 in the series.

UAlbany held a 2-1 lead in the first game after scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Brendan Rowland reached on a Binghamton fielding error before Ryan Gugel drew a walk off the Bearcats' Jeff Dennis. Sean Donovan singled with a bunt, advancing the runners, while Rowland scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Mike Tirri drove in Gugel for the second run with a sacrifice fly.

Binghamton (12-13, AE 5-1) scored five runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead. Peter Bregartner drove in the first run with a single to center field, while Kyle Klee hit a three-run homer over the left field fence. Corey Taylor drove a solo home run to left center in the next at bat before UAlbany pitcher Zach Kraham got Joe Charron out swinging to end the rally.

Chris Ott entered the game for the Great Danes to start the seventh and Bregartner and Calderone hit back-to-back home runs to begin a seven-run inning for the Bearcats. Klee followed with a single and stole second, later scoring on a UAlbany fielding error. Travis Wilson took over on the mound three batters later and gave up a two-run homer by Dave Ciocchi. Two additional runs walked in before the Great Danes got Calderone out on a fielder's choice to end the rally.

Kraham took the loss for UAlbany, allowing six earned runs while fanning five and issuing three walks. Dennis got the win for Binghamton, fanning three over 5.1 innings of work.

After holding a 2-0 lead after two, Binghamton recorded 12 runs in the top of the third to take a commanding lead in game two. Charron recorded an RBI single in the framed, while Calderone and Ciocchi sent two runners home apiece with base hits. Designated hitter Ken Jacobi knocked out a triple to centerfield to account for a run, and later scored on an RBI single by catcher C.J. Lukaszewski.

UAlbany was able to score four runs in the bottom of the fourth. Donovan and Kyle Crean hit back-to-back singles, and Donovan scored on a fielder's choice by Rowland that saw Crean out at second. Gugel knocked his first home run of the game to right field, scoring Rowland for two runs. Tirri was hit by a pitch to get on base, and scored on a double by Gary Pitcheralle.

The Bearcats added a single run in the fifth with a homer by Charron. Taylor drove his second homer of the day to score three runs in the top of the sixth, giving Binghamton an 18-4 advantage. UAlbany added a single run in the seventh and three in the eighth to attempt a rally. Gugel hit his second home run of the game in the eighth, a three-run shot to right field, scoring Crean and Rowland. Crean then drove a solo homer over the right field fence in the bottom of the ninth to set the final score.

Sean Gregory took the loss on the mound for the Great Danes, allowing six earned runs over three innings, striking out four. Mike Augliera earned the win for Binghamton, scattering five hits over six innings of work, fanning four without issuing a walk.
