Baltimore,
Md. ? UAlbany's Mike Konstanty homered three times but UMBC swept the Great
Danes in an America East Conference baseball doubleheader on Friday, May 2 at
The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC. The Retrievers came from behind to win the
opener, 9-7, before pounding out 10 hits in a 10-5 win in the nightcap.
In game one, UAlbany (11-33-1, AE
6-12) jumped out to a 5-0 lead through two innings. The Great Danes opened the
scoring with four runs in the first inning. Junior Sean Donovan singled,
sophomore Brendan Rowland doubled and Konstanty was hit by a pitch to load the
bases. Two batters later, junior Gary Pitcheralle doubled down the left field
line to drive in all three runners. Freshman Kyle Crean followed with a single
through the right side to plate Pitcheralle. Rowland doubled to left field with
two outs in the second inning to plate sophomore Pete Eichner, who reached on a
leadoff single.
UMBC (18-23, AE 10-8) responded in
the third inning with five runs on four hits. Brad Brainer singled through the
right side to drive in Rich Conlon, who doubled with one out, with the first
run of the inning. Scott Peddicord singled and Will Delawter walked around an
out to load the bases. Shawn Retz knotted the score with a grand slam over the
left field fence on a 2-2 pitch.
Konstanty gave the Great Danes a 6-5
lead in the fifth inning with a solo bomb to dead-centerfield. The Retrievers
answered back in the bottom of the frame with four runs. Brainer singled to
open the inning before Peddicord slammed a two-run homer down the right field
line. Two batters later, Delawter doubled to chase UAlbany starter Cory
Warrings from the game. After a walk and a pop out, Tom Meaney hooked a two-run
double down the left field line just out of the reach of a diving catch attempt
by Pitcheralle. Rowland blasted a solo shot over the 365-feet mark in left
center to pull the Great Danes within two. Konstanty was hit by a pitch and
Ryan Gugel singled to get the tying run on base, but Austin Drewyer induced a
groundout to secure UMBC head coach John Jancuska's 650th career win.
In the nightcap, the Retrievers
plated two runs in the first and four in the second to jump out to a 6-1 lead.
Brainer and Peddicord singled to open the first. After a groundout moved each
runner up a base, Delawter knocked in Brainer with a groundout to first. Retz
then singled to right center to drive in Peddicord. Konstanty led off the
second inning with a solo shot to left field to cut the Retrievers' lead in
half. UMBC answered back with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Peddicord
launched a three-run blast to center after Meaney and Brainer walked around a
pair of groundouts. Joe Fowler followed with a single up the middle and Delawter
reached on an error to continue the inning. Retz then singled to third to drive
in Fowler.
The Great Danes scored once in the
third to narrow their gap to 6-2. Crean started the inning with a double to
right field and scored three batters later on a double to center by junior Dave
West. The Retrievers struck for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to expand
their lead to 10-2. Meaney started the scoring as he was hit by a pitch with
the bases loaded to force in Fowler, who walked to lead off the frame. Mark
Lemon followed with a two-run single through the left side to score Retz and
Wink Nolan, who reached on a walk and a single, respectively. Brainer capped
UMBC's scoring with a single through the right side to drive in Meaney.
Konstanty closed out the contest's scoring by blasting a first pitch fastball
for a three-run homer to center to drive in Donovan and Rowland, who reached
via an error and a walk.
Warrings suffered the loss for the
Great Danes in the opener, allowing eight runs over 4.1 innings. Dan Blewett
recorded the win, pitching six innings, while giving up six runs on eight hits.
Drewyer earned his second save by pitching the seventh inning. Junior Josh
Willimott took the loss in game two, yielding six runs (five earned) in just
two innings. Delawter earned the win, tossing five innings, while giving up
five runs (two earned).
UAlbany and UMBC resume the
four-game series with a single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
