N.Y. ? Freshman Dave Kubiak struck out four over seven innings to lead the
UAlbany baseball team to an America East Conference doubleheader split with
Stony Brook on Friday, May 16 at Varsity Field. Stony Brook took the opener,
7-2, while the Great Danes won the nightcap, 4-2.
In game two, Stony Brook (31-23, AE
14-9) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Chad
Marshall
reached on a one-out single down the right-field line. After advancing to
second on a groundout, Rob Dyer registered a ground-rule double over the fence
in left field to knock in Marshall.
UAlbany (16-37-1, AE 9-14) took its
first lead of the day with two runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Sophomore third baseman Pete Eichner opened the frame with a single and
advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior center fielder Gary Pitcheralle then
doubled down the left-field line to plate Eichner. After a successful sacrifice
bunt by junior Sean Donovan moved Pitcheralle to third, sophomore Brendan
Rowland plated Pitcheralle with a sacrifice fly to right field. In the fifth,
Stony Brook tied the score with a run on one hit. Justin Echevarria doubled to
right center to open the inning. Pinch runner Robert Inzerillo then moved to
third on a fly out and scored on a groundout to first base.
The Great Danes scored the go-ahead
runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Mike Konstanty led off the
inning with a double into the right-field gap. Following an out, freshman Jamie
Liebowitz was intentionally walked before Konstanty was picked off second base.
Freshmen Kyle Crean and Toby Adeyemi were each walked around a Stony Brook
pitching change to load the bases. Eichner followed by pulling an 0-1 pitch
through the right side of the infield to drive in Liebowitz and Crean.
Kubiak picked up his fifth win of
the season by tossing his second complete game, while allowing just two runs on
five hits. Mike Errigo took the loss for the Seawolves, yielding four runs on
six hits over 5.2 innings.
In the first game, Stony Brook got
on the board with a run in the opening frame. Brian Witkowski singled on the
ninth pitch of his at-bat to reach base. After two batters were hit by a pitch
to load the bases, Dyer plated Witkowski with a sacrifice fly to right.
The Seawolves extended their lead to
7-0 with three runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Nick
Thode singled through the right side and Marshall
reached on an infield bunt single. After a walk to Michael Stephan loaded the
bases, Dyer delivered a run-scoring single to left field. Steven Mazzurco then
plated Marshall
with a sacrifice fly to left. Stony Brook scored its final run of the inning on
a dropped fly ball by the right fielder to allow Stephan to score. In the
sixth, Jeremy Nowak led off the inning with a double down the left-field line
and advanced to third on an error by the second baseman. Keith Fier followed
with a single to left center to score Nowak. After Thode singled through the
left side, Fier was thrown out at home on a groundout by Witkowski. Marshall then reached on
an error by the first baseman to fill the bases. Following a strikeout and a
UAlbany pitching change, Dyer drove in Thode and Witkowski with a single up the
middle.
The Great Danes scored once in each
of the sixth and seventh innings to deliver the final score. Adeyemi opened the
sixth with a double to right field and moved to third on an error by the right
fielder. Two batters later, Adeyemi scored as Donovan hit into a double play.
In the seventh, Konstanty singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and
moved to third on a groundout. Eichner then grounded out to plate Konstanty.
Cory Warrings suffered the loss for
the Great Danes, yielding seven runs, including four earned, on eight hits over
5.2 innings. Gary Novakowski recorded the win by striking out seven in a
complete-game effort, while allowing just two unearned runs on five hits.
The Great Danes wrap up their season
with a 1:00 p.m. contest with Stony Brook on Saturday, May 17.
