Albany,
N.Y. ? Sophomore Brendan Rowland went 3-for-4 with five runs batted in,
including a go-ahead three-run homer, to lead UAlbany to a 6-5 America East
Conference baseball win over Stony Brook on Thursday, May 15 at Varsity Field.
Stony Brook (30-22, AE 13-8) scored
twice in each of the first and third innings to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Brian
Witkowski and Chad
Marshall opened the game with consecutive singles. Michael Stephan followed
with a single through the right side to drive in Witkowski. Rob Dyer then
grounded out to knock in Marshall
from third. In the third, Witkowski led off the frame with a homer down the
right field line. Following a pair of fly outs, Dyer drilled a solo shot to
right field.
UAlbany (15-36-1, AE 8-13) began its
rally in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Jamie Liebowitz doubled down the
right field line to open the inning. Following an out and a walk to junior Sean
Donovan, Rowland drilled a triple to center field to drive in Liebowitz and
Donovan.
In the seventh, sophomore Pete
Eichner singled up the middle and Liebowitz walked to open the frame. Junior
Gary Pitcheralle then reached on a bunt single up the third base line and
advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Eichner to cut
the Seawolves' lead to 4-3. After a strikeout, Rowland blasted his 10th home
run of the season over the fence in left field to put the Great Danes up 6-4.
Stony Brook was able to score once
in the ninth, but junior Dave Noble shut the door on the Seawolves' rally.
Stephen Marino and Keith Fier registered consecutive singles with one out.
After a fly out moved Marino to third, Witkowski singled through the right side
to plate Marino. Noble entered the game and got Marshall to fly out to center to end the
contest.
Josh Willimott picked up his sixth
win of the season by tossing seven innings, striking out two, while allowing
four runs on eight hits. Noble earned his second save by recording one out. Tom
Koehler suffered the loss for Stony Brook, allowing six runs on six hits over
6.1 innings, while striking out 10 batters.
The Great Danes and the Seawolves
resume their series on Friday with a pair of seven inning contests beginning at
12:00 p.m.
