Binghamton Sweeps UAlbany in America East Baseball Doubleheader

Vestal, N.Y. ? Ryan Holley recorded four hits and drove in five runs to lead Binghamton to an America East Conference baseball doubleheader sweep over UAlbany on Saturday, April 19 at Varsity Field. The Bearcats took the opener 16-5 and held on for a 4-3 win in game two.

In game one, Binghamton (13-21, AE 6-5) jumped out to a 9-0 lead through the first two innings. Peter Bregartner was hit by a pitch and Ryan James singled to open the game. Joe Charron followed with a two-run double to left to open the scoring. After a fly out, Ryan Holley drilled a homer to center to give Binghamton a 4-0 advantage. In the second, James doubled down the left field line to plate Corey Taylor, who led off the frame by being hit by a pitch. After a UAlbany pitching change, James came around to score as Charron reached via an error. Kyle Klee and Holley followed with consecutive run-scoring doubles and Holley closed the inning's scoring by advancing on a wild pitch.

The Great Danes cut into their deficit with a pair of runs in the third inning and three in the fourth. Junior shortstop Sean Donovan got UAlbany on the board with an RBI single to center to plate freshman second baseman Kyle Crean, who opened the inning reaching on an error. Junior center fielder Dave West followed with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in sophomore right field Brendan Rowland, who drew a one-out walk. In the fourth, junior left fielder Gary Pitcheralle recorded a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to score senior Tom Zink, who doubled to center.  Rowland followed with a two-run double to left center to drive in Pete Eichner and Crean, who each got on base after being hit by a pitch.

The Bearcats closed out the game with seven runs over their next three at-bats. Ken Jacobi and Brian Ivan drilled back-to-back homers in the fourth to account for Binghamton's two runs in the frame. In the fifth, Holley singled to score Charron from second. Jacobi followed with a sac fly to right to plate Klee and Ivan closed out the inning by driving in Holley with a single to right. The Bearcats tacked on two runs in the sixth to deliver the final score. Charron singled through the right side to drive home Taylor, who doubled to start the frame. James capped the scoring by crossing the plate on a wild pitch.

In the nightcap, Bregartner homered to lead off the contest. After two outs, Klee singled up the middle, stole second and scored on a single through the right side by Holley. In the second frame, the Bearcats loaded the bases on a pair of walks around a double. James followed with a single to center to plate Ivan. Binghamton took a 4-0 lead with a lone run in the fifth. Charron doubled to left center to open the frame. Following two outs and a walk, Jacobi grounded out to knock in Charron.

UAlbany (9-27-1, AE 4-7) rallied in the last two innings with a pair of runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh. Junior catcher Ryan Gugel and senior first baseman Mike Konstanty led off the sixth with back-to-back singles. After a passed ball moved each runner up 90 feet, Eichner singled to right field to bring the Great Danes within 4-2. Greg Lane took over on the mound for the Bearcats and induced two fly outs and a strike out to end the rally. In the seventh, Donovan doubled down the left field line with one out. Two batters later, Gugel plated Donovan with a single to center. Lane, Friday night's winner, struck out Konstanty to end the game.

Senior Casey Walsh suffered the loss in the opener for UAlbany, surrendering six runs on five hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Jeff Dennis earned his third win of the season in game one for Binghamton, striking out three, while allowing five runs (four earned). Junior Josh Willimott took the loss in the nightcap for the Great Danes, yielding four runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings. Murphy Smith picked up his third win of the season, giving up two runs in five innings, while recording four strikeouts. Lane tossed two innings for his fourth save.
