Burlington, Vt. ? Senior forward Maegan Luce scored both of Vermont's goals to lead the Catamounts to a 2-1 victory over UAlbany in America East Conference field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Moulton Winder Field.
Vermont (6-6, AE 1-1) struck first in the 32nd minute of play, as senior midfielder Kim Striegler collected a rebound off of her own shot that was saved by UAlbany goalkeeper Ashley Ross, and slid a pass over to Luce, who found the back of the cage. The Catamounts held on to a one-goal lead through halftime, and doubled their advantage at 50:08. Sophomore defender Joanna Berger sent a pass behind the UAlbany defense that Luce tracked down and dribbled around Ross for the score.
UAlbany avoided the shutout with a Michelle Simpson goal at 68:14. Simpson recovered a rebound off the pads of Vermont goalkeeper Kristen Heavens and sent a shot into the back of the cage for an unassisted tally.
Vermont held a slight 13-12 advantage in shots while both teams recorded seven penalty corners. Heavens had three saves between the pipes for the Catamounts, while Ross made five saves for the Great Danes.
UAlbany (7-8, AE 1-1) will return to action on Sunday, hosting Connecticut at 2 p.m. at Alumni Turf Field.
