Albany, N.Y. ? Stony Brook used a five-run fourth inning, which included a two-RBI double by designated player Jamie Downer, to take a 6-1 win over UAlbany in the America East Conference series finale on Sunday afternoon.
Stony Brook (28-20, AE 11-9) scored the first run of the game with a solo homer by left fielder Ashley Westphal in the top of the third inning. The Seawolves then tacked on five more in the fourth, paced by Downer's double to centerfield and a two-RBI single by shortstop Victoria Kavitsky later in the inning.
UAlbany (30-15, AE 12-9) scored its only run of the day in the bottom of the fifth frame. Junior first baseman Leanne Tillman led off with a double to left centerfield, and later scored on an RBI single by right fielder Bailey Van Deest. The Great Danes were able to load the bases with back-to-back singles by Amber Maisonet and Nicole Kothe, but Stony Brook hurler Sarah Hoffman induced a fly out to end the inning.
Hoffman finished with four strikeouts in a complete-game performance for the Seawolves. UAlbany starter Casey Halloran went four innings for the Great Danes, fanning three, while freshman Leah McIntosh tossed three innings in relief, striking out seven opposing batters.
The Great Danes, who earned the fourth seed in the America East tournament with a two-game sweep of Stony Brook on Saturday, will start tournament play on Thursday, May 10. The tournament will take place at top-seeded Boston U., with UAlbany playing the host Terriers in the first round of the double-elimination format.
