Albany, N.Y. ? Casey Walsh scattered four hits in a complete-game win, leading UAlbany to a 5-1 win over UMBC in the nightcap to complete a doubleheader sweep in America East Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field. The Great Danes held off a UMBC rally to win the first game, 7-6.
Walsh struck out six in seven innings of work for UAlbany in game two. The Great Danes got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, as a two-run homer by third baseman Steve Wyland gave UAlbany a 2-1 lead. The Great Danes tacked on two more runs in the fourth, as designated hitter Tom Hill led off with a home run to left field. Shortstop Sean Donovan followed with a single, and later stole second. Left fielder Mike Konstanty singled through the left side, scoring Donovan to give the Great Danes a 4-1 advantage.
After UAlbany scored one final run in the sixth inning, Walsh sat down the UMBC batters in order to close out the game and give the Great Danes the sweep.
In the early game, UAlbany (21-25, AE 9-10) withstood a seventh-inning rally by the Retrievers. After a four-run fourth inning put the Great Danes up 7-4, UMBC (12-35, AE 3-16) cut the lead to one with a two-run homer by Scott Peddicord. The Retrievers proceeded to load the bases, but closer Alexander Beaulieu induced a ground-out by Will Delawter to preserve the win.
Centerfielder Dave West finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI, which came in the fourth on a single down the left field line. Right fielder Leo Corvino also finished with an RBI in that inning, driving in Konstanty.
Right-hander Josh Willimott picked up the win for UAlbany, going 4.2 innings on the mound and allowing just one run.
The teams wrap up the four-game series on Sunday with a single game starting at 1:00 p.m. The team will honor its eight graduating seniors prior to first pitch.
