Orono, Maine ? Sophomore second baseman Ashley Waters recorded an RBI double to centerfield, and then scored on a wild pitch to lead Maine to an 8-7 comeback win over UAlbany in America East Conference action on Sunday, April 29 at Kessock Field.
UAlbany (26-14, AE 9-8) took a 7-0 lead in the top off the fourth inning, scoring four runs in the frame. Designated player Marissa Powell led off the inning with a single, and advanced on a throwing error by Maine first baseman Kristie Hawkins. The Great Danes scored two runs later in the inning before freshman Michelle Connors knocked a two-run homer.
Maine (22-25, AE 7-10) started its comeback in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs on home runs by Waters and shortstop Kristen Calvetti. The Black Bears tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 7-5. In the seventh, Waters, who recorded an RBI single in the fifth, drove in left fielder Tara Vilardo and Alexis Pullen to tie the game, then crossed home on a wild pitch by UAlbany's Leah McIntosh to end the game.
Waters finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI while Vilardo scored two runs and drove in another. Sophomore Jenna Balent earned the win for Maine, striking out two over the final four innings.
Left fielder Amber Maisonet went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored for UAlbany, while catcher Kat Smith had two hits and one run scored. Senior hurler Casey Halloran struck out ten opposing batters for the Great Danes, while McIntosh took the loss after allowing the winning run to score.
The Great Danes will return to action on Tuesday, visiting crosstown-rival Siena for a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
