Albany, N.Y. - Senior right-hander John Naples tossed a complete-game shutout to lead UAlbany to a 7-0 win over America East Conference opponent Maine in the first of a four-game series on Friday, April 27 at Varsity Field.
Naples allowed just four hits over his nine-inning outing to produce the first complete-game shutout for the Great Danes since May 19, 2006, when right-hander Mark Suchoweicki tossed nine innings in a 7-0 win over Binghamton.
Centerfielder Dave West and first baseman Steve Sayre each finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Sayre also drove in one run for the Great Danes. The duo combined for back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the eighth to account for UAlbany's final two runs of the game.
UAlbany (16-19, AE 3-6) broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Catcher Chris Wood knocked a double to left center, and second baseman Al Barbato drove in the first run of the game with an RBI single up the middle during the next at bat. Senior third baseman Steve Wyland doubled to center field to drive in two more runs for the Great Danes before the end of the inning.
Barbato drove in two more runs in the sixth with a single through the middle of the infield to score Sayre and West, who each reached base on singles to start the inning.
Sophomore right-hander Alejandro Balsinde tossed a complete game for Maine (13-22, AE 4-5), fanning three, while allowing 14 hits.
The teams will continue the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
