UAlbany Softball Splits America East Doubleheader With Hartford

Albany, N.Y. -- Freshman Michelle Connors recorded her first career grand slam and senior hurler Casey Halloran tossed a no-hitter to lead UAlbany to an 8-0 win in the second game of an America East Conference doubleheader against Hartford on Saturday, April 21 at Albany Field. The Hawks won the early game by a 6-3 margin. The teams will continue the series on Sunday with the rubber match scheduled to start at 12 noon.

UAlbany (23-12, AE 6-6) scored seven runs in the fourth inning. Senior third baseman Kelly Ogden led off the inning with a single up the middle while Meagan Butsch reached on a fielder's choice. First baseman Leanne Tillman advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt, and Marissa Powell was walked by Hartford pitcher Gina Massaro. Catcher Kat Smith reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Ogden, and Butsch was able to cross home plate on an error by Hawks catcher Nikki Thompson.

The Great Danes re-loaded the bases after Bailey Van Deest's sacrifice fly that scored Powell, as Amber Maisonet singled to right field. Nicole Kothe followed with a single of her own to give Connors fully loaded bases during her at bat. Connors drove the long ball over the centerfield fence to record her seventh home run of the season.

UAlbany ended the game in the fifth with one run, as Smith drove in Butsch with a ground-out to the third baseman. Halloran tossed all five innings for the Great Danes, fanning seven, while allowing no hits and issuing zero walks.

Hartford (17-18, AE 8-4) took control in game one, breaking a 2-2 tie in the top of the fifth inning as centerfielder Kristie Rochette scored the tie-breaking run on a wild pitch by UAlbany's Leah McIntosh. The Hawks added three more runs in the top of the seventh, when shortstop Jackie Simonetty scored on an RBI single by Rachel Clonick. Amanda Dilworth followed with an RBI double to left center to drive home the final two runs.

UAlbany managed to score one run in the bottom of the frame, but the Great Danes could get just one runner on base in the inning. McIntosh went 6.2 innings on the mound for UAlbany, striking out 10. Freshman right-hander Brittney Stratton tossed a complete game for the Hawks, finishing with two strikeouts while issuing four walks.
