Stony Brook, N.Y -- Freshman infielder Jeremy Nowak homered and doubled in the nightcap to lead Stony Brook to a doubleheader sweep over UAlbany in America East Conference play on Saturday afternoon at University Field. The Seawolves won the twinbill, 7-4 and 8-4.
Stony Brook (17-15, AE 8-2) took a 3-1 lead after Nowak belted a home run in the first inning and Michael Stephan added a solo blast, his third of the season, in the third. The Seawolves, who shook off a 9-1 loss in the opening game of the weekend series on Friday, added three runs in the fourth. Nowak had a RBI double and then came across on an error by the catcher.
UAlbany (14-19, AE 1-6) sliced the deficit to 6-4 in the fifth by plating three runs. Sean Donovan, who went 3-for-3 in the second game, had a RBI single and was followed by Steve Sayre's run-scoring single to center field. The Seawolves added two insurance runs in the bottom of the frame when Keith Fier singled to score two runners following a double steal.
In the first game, Stony Brook built a 7-0 lead after two innings. Michael Tansey drove in a run with a single and later scored in the first. Third baseman Chris Cruz followed with a two-run double to right field. Robert Leonard, who went 3-for-3 at the plate, delivered a run-scoring single to center field in the second. Tansey,a sophomore right fielder, then plated two more with a single.
UAlbany chipped away with a pair of runs in the latter innings. Sayre doubled to left field to score Leo Corvino and Dave West in the fourth. In the sixth, West, who collected four hits on the day, led off with a single and scored on Sayre's two-bagger to left field. Sayre later came across on Steve Wyland's fielders' choice ground ball.
SBU reliever Matt Lyons came on in the sixth to pitch the 1.2 innings for starter Gary Novakowski, who improved to 3-1 on the mound. Lyons allowed one hit, a lead-off single by Donovan in the seventh, but got of trouble when Corvino tapped into a 1-6-3 double play.
