Stony Brook, N.Y ? Leo Corvino went 4-for-4, including a three-run homer in the sixth, to finish with five RBI to lead UAlbany to a 9-1 win in the America East Conference series opener with Stony Brook on Friday afternoon at University Field.
The Seawolves took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, and held the Great Danes without a run until the fifth, when catcher Chris Wood led off the frame with a triple and was driven in on an RBI single by Corvino. Corvino was later caught stealing, but UAlbany scored another run when sophomore shortstop Sean Donovan knocked an RBI single to score Steve Wyland.
UAlbany (14-17, AE 1-4) tacked on another four runs in the sixth inning. Designated hitter Tom Zink got on base with a walk, and was driven home by Wood, who knocked an RBI single which also advanced Steve Sayre, who reached on a single to second base. Corvino followed with his home run to give the Great Danes a 6-1 advantage.
UAlbany added a single run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to seal the win. Strong pitching by starter John Naples, who went six innings to earn his fifth win of the season, and reliever Sean Gregory, who tossed the final three innings, held Stony Brook to just three hits in the game.
Stony Brook (15-15, AE 6-2) had single hits by right fielder Robert Leonard and third baseman Chris Cruz.
The two teams return to the field Saturday for a doubleheader starting at noon.
