Baseball Unable to Hold Early Lead at Bryant

Score: Bryant 15, UAlbany 5 (8 inn.)

Location: Conaty Park – Smithfield, R.I.

Records: UAlbany (8-20, 5-7 America East) | Bryant (19-14, 7-5 America East)

Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team built an early lead but could not hold off Bryant, falling 15-5 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon.

Coach Jon Mueller: "Today was very similar to Friday with the free stuff. We never really gave ourselves a chance in the middle. Five non-conference contests coming up before we resume the last half of conference season."

Key Stats: How it Happened:
  • UAlbany jumped out to a strong start in the first inning. Michael Maggio singled and Patrick DeSarno doubled before Brian Guerrero delivered a two-RBI single to give the Great Danes a 2-0 lead.
  • The Great Danes added another run in the second inning when John Vitucci scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • Ethan Nardacci got the start on the mound and held Bryant to one run through the first three innings before the Bulldogs began to chip away.
  • Bryant cut into the lead in the third with an RBI single and then took control in the fourth inning. A combination of walks, a sacrifice fly, and multiple balks allowed Bryant to score three runs and take a 4-3 lead.
  • In the fifth inning, Nardacci was lifted for Tyler Kneller as Bryant continued to apply pressure. The Bulldogs added two runs in the frame to extend their lead to 6-3.
  • UAlbany responded in the sixth inning. Luke Filippi doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Cooper Loyal, and Michael Maggio came home on an error to trim the deficit to 6-5.
  • Later in the inning, Mark Gajowski took over on the mound, but Bryant broke the game open with a grand slam followed by a solo home run to extend the lead to 11-5.
  • Bryant added another run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.
  • Zach Nalawadi entered in the eighth inning, but the Bulldogs continued to add on with three more runs to make it 15-5.
Next: The Great Danes return home to face CCSU in a mid-week matchup on Tuesday, April 14 at 3:00 PM.
