Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team battled through 15 innings Friday afternoon, but St. John's secured a walk-off RBI single to edge the Great Danes, 2-1.

Coach Jon Mueller: " Tremendous baseball game. [Dylan] Banner and Matt Mariano were outstanding. We had limited opportunities on a difficult day for the offenses."

Key Stats: How it Happened:
  • Both teams threatened early but were kept off the scoreboard through four innings as Dylan Banner struck out five and stranded multiple runners.
  • St. John's broke through in the bottom of the fifth when Rob Mansour delivered an RBI single following a fielding error to take a 1-0 lead.
  • UAlbany answered in the seventh. Patrick DeSarno singled and stole second before advancing to third on a groundout. John Vitucci then lined an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The pitching staffs controlled the game from there. Matthew Mariano entered in the seventh and held the Red Storm scoreless across eight strong innings while striking out six.
  • The Great Danes threatened several times in extras, including runners in scoring position in the 11th and 13th innings and a Michael Maggio double in the 15th, but could not push across the go-ahead run.
  • St. John's ended the marathon in the bottom of the 15th when Sean Britt delivered a walk-off RBI single to score Dylan Fitzsimmons and secure the 2-1 win.
Next: The Great Danes have a two more games slated against St John's, tomorrow, March 7 at 2:00 PM and Sunday, March 8 at 1:00 PM.
