Baseball Drops a Pair Against UMBC

Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team fell to UMBC in a pair of games on Friday afternoon.  
 

Coach Jon Mueller: "Credit to UMBC they played a clean Day and threw the ball well. We struggled all afternoon offensively and faltered defensively in game two."

How it Happened Game 1:  

  • UMBC got on the board first with an RBI double in the top of the second to make it 1-0 early. 

  • In the bottom of the frame, The Great Danes picked up a pair of singles but were unable to score. 

  • After five strong innings from UAlbany starting pitcher Christian MelloTyler Kneller took over in the top of the sixth.  

  • Following a leadoff double and a passed ball, the Retrievers extended their lead in the top of the sixth with a sac fly to push the score to 2-0.  

  • The Great Danes loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but were unable to plate any runs, and UMBC walked away with a 2-0 win in game 1.  
     

How it Happened Game 2: 

  • UMBC struck first in the top of a first with a leadoff triple and a groundout that scored the runner to make it 1-0. 

  • Jaxon Muller led off the bottom of the second with a single and got to third on a ground ball and a passed ball but was unable to score, and the score remained 1-0. 

  • After a hit by pitch to load the bases in the top of the fifth, the Retrievers roped a two-run double to extend the lead to 3-0. A single later in the frame pushed two more across and made the score 5-0. 

  • UAlbany got on the board in the bottom of the frame when Victor Mazarra looped a bases-loaded sac fly into right to push Tre Mariano across to cut into the lead, 5-1. 

  • In the top of the seventh, UMBC loaded the bases with no outs and recorded a trio of runs to push the lead to 8-1. 

  • In the bottom of the seventh, Zach Mrvalja drove in Mariano on a single through the infield to make the score 8-2. 

  • Mariano led off the bottom of the ninth with a double and got driven home on a Kyle Stephens single that bounced off second base to make the score 8-3, the final score of the game.  
     

Next: The Great Danes will close out this conference series Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM.
