Doubleheader Sweep Opens Softball’s Spring Break Road Trip

SHORT STORY: After a slow start to the day, the Great Dane offense blossomed through the end of the first game and into the second to sweep the doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's, Saturday.
 
GAME ONE

KEY STATS
  • Senior Sara Anderson led with two RBI and two hits, including one double.
  • Redshirt-junior Natasha Mendez added a double and junior Taylor Quinn added an RBI.
  • Sophomore Hayley Wieczerzak pitched seven strikeouts, with no walks, in four innings before an injury took her out of the game. Freshman Julia Pike closed the game and earned the win, allowing just one run in three innings.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hayley Wieczerzak caught the first MSM batter looking and continued to total four strikeouts in the first two innings.
  • UAlbany tallied its first hit in the fifth inning, an infield single from senior Deanna Grahek, but the game remained tied at zero.
  • Julia Pike took over in the circle before the bottom of the fifth and the Mountaineers scored a run with an RBI double.
  • The Great Danes answered with two runs in the top of the sixth.
  • Senior Kasey Conn and sophomore Kaitlyn Parisi hit two consecutive singles and each stole a base to put two baserunners in scoring position.
  • Sara Anderson hit a double to left center to bring in both runners for the 2-1 lead.
  • Mendez and Grahek added two runs in the seventh inning to secure the win, 4-1.

KEY STATS
  • Freshman Katie Parisi led the team with three RBI.
  • Freshman Sierra Roy compiled two hits, including her first career home run, two runs, and two RBI.
  • Junior Mary Kate Murray drove in two runs.
  • Julia Pike scored three times having got on base twice with a walk and once with a hit.
  • Sophomore Hailey Errichiello earned the game win pitching three innings. Freshman Becca Munslow came in for the fourth and fifth innings and pitched four strikeouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The scoring started in the first inning with an RBI from Katie Parisi and a run from MSM to even the score.
  • UAlbany added three runs in the second inning, starting with Sierra Roy's first career home run.
  • With Taylor Quinn on third base, Kasey Conn hit a bunt and earned the RBI while making it to second base due to an undefended base.
  • Parisi tallied her second RBI of the game bringing Julia Pike in with a single up the middle.
  • The third inning proved the most fruitful for UAlbany with all nine batters seeing the batter's box, seven of which earned a hit.
  • Four consecutive hits from Deanna Grahek, Roy, Quinn, and redshirt-junior Gaelen Kelly started the inning and made it a 7-1 game.
  • After a pitching change, the Great Danes loaded the bases and Kelly, Conn, Sara Anderson, and Pike scored for a 10-1 advantage after three innings.
  • Freshman Pyper Morley hit an infield single before scoring what proved to be the final run of the game in the top of the fifth.
  • In the final two innings, Becca Munslow faced nine batters, striking out four and allowing two hits, as she closed out the 11-1 win.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will play a second doubleheader against MSM on Sunday (Mar. 15).
