Baseball Falls to Illinois After Six-Run Rally

Score: Illinois 14, UAlbany 6

Location: Flour Field – Greenville, S.C.

Records: UAlbany (0-7, 0-0 America East) | Illinois (7-4, 0-0 BIG10)

Short Story: The Great Danes erased a four-run deficit with a six-run middle inning but Illinois responded late, Sunday afternoon.

Coach Jon Mueller: "Thought we played well for 6 innings. We ran out of gas late in the game and need to clean up some things defensively. Overall, we had a small margin for error this weekend and we were punished when we gave free things away. A lot of good examples of what we need to improve on moving forward."

Key Stats: How it Happened:
  • Illinois opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second and added three runs in the fourth, including a two-run homer, to build a 5-0 lead.
  • UAlbany responded immediately in the bottom of the fourth. Cooper Loyal and Michael Maggio worked walks before Levi McAllister drove a two-run home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
  • The Great Danes broke through in a big way in the sixth. Loyal tripled to center and scored on an RBI single from Maggio. After Luke Filippi reached and moved into scoring position, Kyle Stephens doubled to left center to bring home two runs. Logan Morris followed with an RBI single to center, completing a four-run inning and tying the game at 6-6.
  • Illinois regained the lead in the seventh on a sacrifice fly and added two more runs following a throwing error to move back in front 9-6.
  • The Illini added five runs in the ninth to extend the final margin.
Next: The Great Danes return to New York and visit St. John's for a three-game series Mar. 6 – Mar. 8 at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
