SHORT STORY: Junior Emma Staron and freshman Jette Kurz scored their first collegiate goal in a 10-0 victory over New Haven, Wednesday afternoon.
 
COACH PHIL SYKES: "Very good effort today. I am proud of how hard they played - it's our third game in six days so we are playing on little rest. I am very proud of how they played offensively and defensively. They created some good scoring chances - hopefully we can carry that into our next game."
 
KEY STATS
  • Junior Pilar Lorenzini earned her first career hat trick.
  • Emma Staron followed with two goals and one assist for five points while graduate student Indy van Ek tallied one goal and two assists for four points.
  • Four additional Great Danes scored once - senior Sophia Schoonmaker, sophomore Sarah Salameh, sophomore Tessa Overgoor, and Jette Kurz.
  • On the assist, graduate student Olivia Bell tallied two while five Great Danes each earned one.
  • UAlbany totaled 31 shots, including 18 shots on goal, with 10 penalty corners.
  • New Haven is in their first season as a Division I team. This was their second game of the season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Emma Staron opened the scoring just three minutes into the game. Grabbing a shot deflected off the post, Staron sent the ball back towards the net for her first collegiate goal.
  • UAlbany went up by two before the end of the first quarter as Pilar Lorenzini, Olivia Bell, and junior Mara Küskes combined for a goal during a penalty corner.
  • Just over three minutes into the second quarter, Jette Kurz took the ball from the sideline and dribbled it into the circle while dodging several defenders. The rookie shot the ball from about seven yards out with a pop over the goalie for her first collegiate goal.
  • Nearing the end of the first half, Lorenzini and Bell combined for another penalty-corner goal. This time, the insert and second assist came from Indy van Ek.
  • In the third quarter, Sophia Schoonmaker tallied both a goal and an assist.
  • With 5:47 on the clock, Sarah Salameh tipped a Schoonmaker shot into goal. Three minutes later, Schoonmaker made three consecutive shots during a penalty corner for her first goal of the season.
  • Four additional goals were scored in the final quarter to secure the 10-0 shutout.
  • Lorenzini began the quarter with a stroke just over one minute in. Tessa Overgoor, with an assist from Staron, followed up with her second goal of the season.
  • Staron added her second goal with a tip off a shot from van Ek. The graduate student scored the final goal of the game with an assist from fellow classmate Rylee Zunic. 

NEXT: The Great Danes will continue at home with their Alzheimer's Awareness game against Columbia on Friday (Sept. 5).
